There are six weeks left for me to finish up my Genius hour project and to prove I have been doing what I said I was going to do. I have almost completed round 2 of giving out herbs across the community. I am going to hand out the last 20 plants next week.
To prove that I have completed my genius hour project I will provide pictures, possibly recipes if I can find them, and copies of the hand outs that I provided with the herbs I handed out. If this is not enough I might be able to find the people who were working on the days I handed out herbs. My parents could also prove that I completed m project because they have had to deal with two groups of 45 plants in their basement throughout the past 6 months.(: I have heard from a few people that their plants have not died and they use them in their meals all the time. I enjoyed my experience with helping people find a healthy way to fill their meals with flavor.

Students Create Music From Nature Data
By Jim Schaefer The article I read on the STEM Education page was about a project made by a group of students from Michigan Tech University in Houghton, MI. The students were Paul Kirby, Thomas Conran, Collin Doerr-Newton, and Mason Pew. The used the data that has been captured on Isle Royale since 1958 and turned it into music and art. The received the data that is in the hands of Vucetich. They split the project into three sound categories: moose, wolves, and climate. They believed their project would also be a way for people to learn about the work that has been done on the island in the middle of Lake Superior. Their inspiration was from a man named John Luther Adams, who made music from the sounds of nature. Once they collected data from the three categories, moose, wolves, and climate, they began changing the data into musical notes. When listening, you can hear the soaring highs and the bottomed-out lows of the moose. The high screeches and sudden declines of wolf packs can also be heard. The changing weather patterns such as rain to gusts of wind can also be heard. At first the project was only able to be seen on campus until another student, Matt Vaught, decided to make a website for the project. Now the beautiful sounds can be heard by anyone. Student-centered learning was involved in the success of the project. The college students found something that interested them, which was Isle Royale. They found away to make a project out of their interest, which was turning the data on wolves, moose, and climate, into music. Then they shared their findings first to their school and then put it onto the internet for the world to see. Their project is a great example of how students do much better on projects that are based on something that interests them. I went onto the website to listen to a few of the clips and have attached the link below. www.isleroyalewolf.org/sonification Cloud's purpose in writing this article was to show the two ways that most geniuses are made from. The first is the idea from Gladwell, who states that practice makes perfect. He believes in the ten year rule, which means that someone needs to practice a specific thing for ten years to master it. The second idea is from Simonton, a "friend" of Gladwell. He believes that a person needs to be smart enough for practice to teach you something. He also states that personality traits are important. To conclude, Cloud says that Gladwell dismisses the point that kids need higher IQs to achieve success. He believes that smarter kids need to be recognized istead of held back with everyone else in their grade. I think this is very true. In public school especially, the smarter kids seemed to have a hard time getting into advanced classes or moving along faster in a specific class because others are struggling. In our Genius Hour project, we were able to work at our own pace and determine how well our projects worked out based on our work ethic.
On Tuesday November 22 Mr. Cowen came in to my English class to talk about his Genius Hour Project. I loved his speech about his 3-D Printer that he made. I would like to set up my speech about my Genius Hour Project like he did. Mr. Cowen started off by explaining why he chose to make a 3-D printer and then how he made it. Then he showed us what he can do with his 3-D printer and brought in some examples. He showed how this can be used to help out the community. He interacted with the audience by showing them things that he made with his 3-D printer and what they are used for. Mr. Cowen used a power point also to show what a 3-D printer entails. I enjoyed Mr. Cowen's presentation about his Genius Hour project.
First off, I would like to apologize for the late post. Last Tuesday, the 15th of November, I was at the Northern Lights YMCA handing out more herbs. I gave out Chives, Parsley, Sage, and Rosemary. I had a blast giving them away and meeting new people.
In the Future I have 15 more plants to give away and have not yet determined where I will set up my stand quite yet. The plants are very big now and will need to be re-potted when they are with their new owners. I am still taking care of them to the best of my abilities. I can not wait to meet more people and share with them my project and knowledge. This Week
Throughout the week I continued to take care of my plants. I also printed off the recipes I would give out with my "business card" and herbs. There is a link in my resources page to the site where I found the recipes if you would like more. I handed out 10 plants at the Northern Lights YMCA. (4 chives, 4 Parsley, and 2 Sage). I also made Cheddar Biscuits with Chive Butter for people to try! I had a blast giving away herbs and can not wait to do it again! Next Week I plan to give away ten more herbs on November 15, which is next Tuesday. I have not decided what types of herbs I will be giving out yet. The author who wrote this article had a different look at how to explain a genius. He said geniuses know “how” to think instead of “what” to think. The author also said that geniuses are not necessarily the smartest person or the one with the best IQ. They are the ones that keep searching even after they have found what they are looking for. The definition of genius is a little different in a dictionary. The dictionary would say that a genius is someone who is very intelligent or creative. The author believes there is much more to a genius that just being intelligent. There are eight strategies shared by geniuses: they look at problems in many different ways, make their thoughts visible, produce, make novel combinations, force relationships, think in opposites, think metaphorically, and prepare themselves for chance. My genius hour project encourages me to make my thoughts visible by constantly coming up with different ways to make my project better and more complex. My project also encourages me to look at problems in many different ways. I have realized that it is OK to fail. It gives me a chance to fix my project and learn from mistakes of the past.
This Week This past week I continued to water my plants and trim them. They are getting really big now! Next Week Next week will be that first week I start to give out plants. I will pick four plants to give out. They will have a recipe and other unique things that someone can use the herb for. This Week
This past week, I continued to water, trim, and feed my plants. I also found some recipes I am considering to use when handing out the plants. Next Week I am planning to pick out four plants to hand out over the weekend. They each will have a recipe and an environmental tip attached. I will continue to water, feed, and trim the other plants. I recently read an article about other teachers and students who are also involved in genius hour. Even though our project is set up differently I still learned a few things that I would like to incorporate into my project. With my genius hour project, I am working with plants. If my plants end up dying, which I hope doesn’t happen, I have made a backup plan. I will dry out the herbs and then give away little bags of them with recipes they can be used in. I also was reminded that this is MY project and I can decide if I want to alter the plan or not. The article talked about how excited the students were to work on their projects. I realized that I get excited too when I go to check on my plants and water them! I think it is because I feel that something(the herbs) needs my help and attention to survive and I want to help them!
This Week I continued to water, trim, and feed my plants. They are getting bigger and I believe it has to do with the fancy light I got them. I started to look up recipes and environmental tips to attach to the herbs when I give them away. Next Week My goal is to keep the plants alive! I will continue watering, feeding, and trimming them as usual until November 5, when I start to give them away! This Week
This past week I worked on re-potting some of the herbs that were out growing their pots. I also went to Home Depot and found a 75-Watt Agro Plant Light for growing the herbs under. I water the plants a little everyday. I also trimmed the herbs two times throughout the week to cut off all of the dead leaves and stems. The are also listening to music and I read them a few stories. The plants love the Carbon Dioxide. Next Week This upcoming week I will continue to water and trim my herbs. If needed, I will re-pot more herbs. I will continue to play music and read them stories. |
