This Week
This past week, I continued to water, trim, and feed my plants. I also found some recipes I am considering to use when handing out the plants. Next Week I am planning to pick out four plants to hand out over the weekend. They each will have a recipe and an environmental tip attached. I will continue to water, feed, and trim the other plants.

I recently read an article about other teachers and students who are also involved in genius hour. Even though our project is set up differently I still learned a few things that I would like to incorporate into my project. With my genius hour project, I am working with plants. If my plants end up dying, which I hope doesn’t happen, I have made a backup plan. I will dry out the herbs and then give away little bags of them with recipes they can be used in. I also was reminded that this is MY project and I can decide if I want to alter the plan or not. The article talked about how excited the students were to work on their projects. I realized that I get excited too when I go to check on my plants and water them! I think it is because I feel that something(the herbs) needs my help and attention to survive and I want to help them!
This Week I continued to water, trim, and feed my plants. They are getting bigger and I believe it has to do with the fancy light I got them. I started to look up recipes and environmental tips to attach to the herbs when I give them away. Next Week My goal is to keep the plants alive! I will continue watering, feeding, and trimming them as usual until November 5, when I start to give them away! This Week
This past week I worked on re-potting some of the herbs that were out growing their pots. I also went to Home Depot and found a 75-Watt Agro Plant Light for growing the herbs under. I water the plants a little everyday. I also trimmed the herbs two times throughout the week to cut off all of the dead leaves and stems. The are also listening to music and I read them a few stories. The plants love the Carbon Dioxide. Next Week This upcoming week I will continue to water and trim my herbs. If needed, I will re-pot more herbs. I will continue to play music and read them stories. This Past Week
Throughout this past week I have already bought my herbs and started to take care of them. I have 5 different types of herbs and a total of 36 plants. The 5 types of herbs are Parsley, Sage, Oregano, Chives, and Garlic Chives. Next Week For the upcoming week I plan to buy a grow lamp and food for the plants. I will also be re-potting the herbs into fancy pots. I want the gifts to look nice for when I give them to people throughout the community. Project as a Whole My genius hour project will last until the last week of December. I will take care of my plants until November 5. Each week I will hand out. I will hand out about 4 plants each week for 8 weeks. By December 31 I plan to have given away all of my plants. The herbs will have a recipe attached and an environmental tip. I will give my plants to friends and family. I will also go to the YMCA and the VA to hand out herbs. Taking Care of the Herbs The plants will need water, food, and lots of light. The water will be from our rain water barrels. I will feed the herbs eggshells and they are already planted in the right soil. Most of the light they will receive is from a grow light because our house does not receive a lot of light. |
